MANILA, Philippines — Another ashing event was observed at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental on Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Friday.

Phivolcs told INQUIRER.net that it occurred from 8:18 am to 8:22 a.m. on Thursday.

Phivolcs described an ashing event as “gray ash being entrained or brought out by continuous degassing from the Kanlaon Volcano.”

Based on the 24-hour observation, the volcano emitted plumes rising about 300 meters tall that drifted west and west-southwest.

Sulfur dioxide emissions also increased to 8,040 tons on Thursday from 6,730 tons on Wednesday.

The volcano remained at Alert Level 2 (increased unrest), which means entry to the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone and flying any aircraft near the volcano’s crater are prohibited.

Phivolcs also warned that phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity might occur.
